Bird Watching

Birdwatching in Dumfries and Galloway

This area is of keen interest to ornithologists, with Caerlaverock and the Ken/Dee nature reserve playing host to both static and migratory populations. Red Kite have recently been introduced to the Glenkens and buzzards and Osprey have recolonised in the area in the past few years.

Both sides of the riverbank from the head of the loch to the hotel grounds are designated as sites of special scientific interest. Ospreys & Eagles are now nesting in the region and can be seen each summer on Loch Ken.

The River Ken is home to Kingfishers, Herons, Swans, Oyster Catchers and Mallards.
